An e-mail exchange with the local Ford dealer yielded the embarrasingly simple solution.  What I thought was a quick push on the phone button was, in fact, too long.  A very fast push (perhaps a quarter of a second or less) yielded the phone menu.  I have since run some trial-and-error experiments with the phone button on my system.   The "press" function, as called for in the Sync owner's manual,  seems to mean pressing (or tapping) the phone button for about half a second or less (judging from timing based on the first two syllables of "one-one-thousand'). Perhaps the Sync manual might emphasize the difference between "press" and "press and hold" in the future. Hope others might find this useful.

An e-mail exchange with the local Ford dealer yielded the embarrasingly simple solution.  What I thought was a quick push on the phone button was, in fact, too long.  A very fast push (perhaps a quarter of a second or less) yielded the phone menu.  So, I again tried to load (via USB flash drive) the Windows XP - generated SyncMyPhone software.  Went through the paces, but the installation again failed.  The audio message said either the file is too large (it had less than a dozen contacts) or it was incompatible.  I assume that, somehow, it is the latter. Any suggestions are welcome.

Pushing the "Phone" button (on dash and on steering wheel) has suddenly stopped yielding "Phone Menu" (new 2010 Fusion Hybrid). The car ignition was "on," the car in park, radio on, bluetooth cell phone connected to Sync. When I pushed the "phone" button to get to the phone menu, there was no response from the system.  I've tried this repeatedly, even varying the push times, but nothing happens.  Menu does not come up, and the radio (currently Sirius) keeps playing.  I had considered resetting things to factory settings, but apparently you have to use the Phone menu even to do that. Via voice commands, it is clear that Sync is connected to, and interacting with, my cell phone properly.  For example, I can end a Sync session by a long push on either "Phone" button.  This problem came after an unsuccessful attempt via USB flash drive to load phone contacts into Sync using SyncMyPhone. I had used Windows 7 to create the contact list (that worked OK), but Sync reported that the attempt was unsuccessful.  What might have happened to cause this?  The "Phone" button did indeed work properly (bringing up the phone menu, etc.) just before I tried the unsuccessful loading of the Contacts I previously reported.  Now it does not respond.  Did I accidentally change some setting?  Might the unsuccessful installation affect the system in some way? Thanks in advance.

Here's an update... After authoring a new SyncMyPhone contacts list via the XP computer, I then went to my the car to load the contacts into Sync via the USB flash drive. Car ignition was "on," the car in park, radio on, bluetooth cell phone connected to Sync, and USB flash drive in the socket.  Following directions, I pushed the "phone" button to get to the phone menu. No response from the system.  I tried repeatedly.  Menu does not come up, and the radio (currently Sirius) keeps playing.  I had considered resetting things to factory settings, but you have to use the Phone menu to do even that. Via voice commands, it is clear that Sync is connected to, and interacting with, my cell phone properly.  And, I can end voice-generated Sync calls, etc., by pushing the "Phone" button.  So, for those more experienced with the Sync system than I, what might have happened to cause this?  The "Phone" button did indeed work properly (bringing up the phone menu, etc.) just before I tried the unsuccessful loading of the Contacts I previously reported.  Now it does not respond.  Did I accidentally change some setting?  Might the unsuccessful installation affect the system in some way?  Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.  I may post this as a separate thread as well.

Thanks. I'll try using the SyncMyPhone contacts software via a Dell Windows XP computer I have in the bullpen, and then go through the process of loading it via USB flash drive into the car's Sync.  I'll have to use the current version of the SyncMyPhone software, though.  Certainly the software should be devised to work all the way through for those of us using Windows 7. I wonder whether the Sync engineers might be able to devise a way for owners to load contacts into the owner's Sync account on the web and then download them into the car's Sync system from the latter, just as we can customize favorites, locations, etc.  That might sidestep a lot of compatibility issues with phones, computer software, etc.  Sometimes our own computers can be frustrating, and I'd hate to see that frustration carried over into these Ford vehicles.

I seem to be having a different but related problem.  Perhaps someone might offer advice? Today I downloaded the SyncMyPhone program and it ran successfully (or at least seemed to) on my Windows 7 Dell computer.  I manually created the contacts list, saved it, and then using the icon atop the SyncMyPhone window, transferred the information to my USB flash drive.    I then followed the instructions for loading the contacts list into the Sync phone system ("Installing a Phone Book") in my 2010 Fusion hybrid.  I first installed the USB flash drive into the USB port in the car.  "Ignition" and radio were on and the cell phone, which is set as the primary phone,  had a bluetooth connection with Sync.   I pressed the car's "phone" button, the "menu," and then navigated to "system settings"..."Advanced"..."Install Application," as directed, then pressed OK. The SYNC system began the download, and then reported that the installation had failed.  Of course, it didn't indicate why.  I tried it again after removing the USB and even restarting the car.  No luck. I've had this car for only a couple of weeks so far, and am just learning about many of the finer aspects.  Perhaps I missed something.  Thanks in advance. WCRR
