I posted this in another similar thread. I think you will find out it is your phone, not SYNC that can't recognize the name you are asking for.  I have trouble calling 1 person in my phone book (Sami) , it will always dial the same wrong person (Sandy). Then I got a call from Sami  the name is pronounced  'Somi' by the phone, through SYNC. I called her back using 'Somi" and it dialed the correct number.  My phone says 'Somi" when it is not connected to the car. It is the phones voice that comes over SYNC when a call comes in. not the SYNC voice.  If there are similar names in your phone it is the phone, not SYNC that has the trouble. I have an Instinct and can voice dial with it. I need to tell it to dial pronouncing names  just as it tells me who the call is coming from.  You say the names are unrelated, so you may have different problem, but can you voice dial with the phone and how does it work then?

sorry, forgot to add, I re-connect (using) through the phone, not SYNC.

The only time I need to re-connect manually  is if I shut my phone off for the night and turn it back on in the A.M.  If I leave the phone on, connection is automatic and has never failed.  I think this issue is a 'phone' thing and not SYNC.

This is what Ford says:       SYNC, MULTIPLE VEHICLE LINE AND MODEL YEAR SYNC SYSTEM VOICE TOO LOUD, TOO QUIET. SOME 2008-2010 SYNC EQUIPPED VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT THE SYNC SYSTEM VOICE TOO LOUD OR TOO SOFT. THIS IS A NORMAL SYSTEM OPERATING STRATEGY AND NO REPAIR IS NECESSARY. THERE WILL BE NO REVISIONS FOR THIS IN THE FUTURE FOR THE 2008-2010 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. DO NOT REPLACE OR UPGRADE THE ACCESSORY PROTOCOL INTERFACE MODULE(APIM)FOR THIS CONCERN.   You can adjust the Sync voice, and it does remember it. The problem is the Sync voice and the phone calls are tied together, to hear  the phone, the Sync voice will shatter your ear drums if you don't turn it back down. But this message does not acknowledge that it is adjustable at least for directions.  Just live with where ever yours happens to be? Great answer.

What  I have found on my 10 Fusion and 10 Focus:   adjust  the sync  volume while the sync lady is talking, the volume stays there no matter where the radio volume is/was.  it has been a week now and the sync volume is still at the same level though I have had the radio up and down. I have tried that with the phone volume, it does not seem to work the same way. The sync lady and phone are tied together, if I raise the phone to hear it, the sync lady is real loud when she comes back on.  It is irritating to have to keep adjusting back and forth, but at least it stays constant using directions. I should check the  USB/iPod part of it. I have only used it once, and it was prior to figuring out the above. I don't know if that input is controlled the same way.  Will somebody try this and report if successful for them?
