Ok....Fingers crossed here, but did a check for a firmware/software upgrade to my iPod Touch tonight, and lo and behold, version 3.1.2 is available.  I've downloaded it, and installed it but won't know for sure until tomorrow morning when I leave for work.  The release notes mentioned a number of fixes.  It DID NOT mention anything about Sync (No surprises there).  Like I said, fingers crossed.  Anyone beat me to the punch and installed/tried it??

I am installing the 3.1.2 software right now as well. I might just go outside and give it a try after the install. I hope this fixed it.

Ok.  Here's the update.  The good news is that Sync finished indexing my iPod Touch with >5400 songs in a record 9 minutes.  The bad news is that I got the Sync could not finish indexing message because of incomplete information (genre, etc).   I will re-run the Sync my iTunes s/w tonight.  The real test will be on my way home to see if sync will have to re-index.

Ok here is my update:

I have been posting on the other thread regarding this subject but thought I would chime in here too.  After the endless indexing issue that I was having I did the following.

I sucessfully rolled back my firmware to 3.0 on my gen 2 ITouch.  I resynced with itunes 9.0.1.8.  I plugged my ITouch into my Ford F250 with Sync and in less than 5 minutes it was indexed and so far seems to be functioning well. I really hope Ford and or Apple will fix whatever caused the loss of functionality between the two with the 3.1.x update so I can get bluetooth back.

This would seem to confirm that the issue is with the ITouch firmware 3.1.x and not an issue with iTunes.  If any one has found a fix allowing them to keep 3.1.2 please let me know!  Thanks

OK.  This should be my last post on the subject, unless something goes 'weird' on me, and stops working.  In my last post, I indicated that my Sync indexed my iPod in less than 10 minutes, compared to over an hour prior to the iPod upgrade to 3.1.2.

Sync did report that it could not  index everything due to missing data such as genre, etc.   I ran the SyncMyiTunes software this evening, and no anomolies were reported on any songs, but it stated that Playlists were updated.  This makes sense, since I created a couple of playlists, and the most version of iTunes, creates a couple of new playlists.  So, I'm pretty confident that other then the new playlists, the songs go indexed.  Plus on the way home I used sync to chose Artists, Albums, and Playlists, and all worked.

Finally, the other painful condition that I  was experiencing, prior to  the  upgrade to  3.1.2, was the restarting of the whole indexing process (over an hour back them) every time I turned the key on, even during an 8 hour trip, where it was completely indexed, but we made the 'mistake' of stopping for lunch,  it started all over again.  I'm happy to report that when I left work tonight Sync and my iPod Touch picked up where they left off this morning, with NO additional indexing.

Case Closed!!!  Thanks for listening

Here is my report on the 3.1.2 firmware upgrade. My Ipod finally finished indexing, after a record 1 hour and 45 min!!! It actually played everything on the ipod, and seemed to stay indexed the rest of the day. Yesterday I went to the car, and plugged in the Ipod. Well.... It decided to re-index (nothing changed at all on the Ipod. Being frustrated, and realizing that I did not want to drive or let the car run for another 1.75 hours, I unplugged and went back inside. Today, however it took a couple min. to index the ipod but only recognized 10 songs out of my 3000 We are now on what, 6 months since 3.0 came out? and still no fix for the problem from Apple or Microsoft?

I just want to throw my two cents in and say that I also recently updated my iPod Touch (1G, 32GB) to the OS 3.1.2 firmware and still no luck.  After someone had previously posted that there iPod had finished indexing in about 10 minutes, I was optimistic.  However, after 25 minutes of indexing on the way home from work yesterday, my device still was not complete.

Furthermore, I contacted a SYNC agent in order to get the official word on this known issue.  It is at current still under investigation and officially unresolved.

I also downloaded the update on my 1st gen Touch and saw no change.  Still have the indexing issue and still have a problem with it recognizing the USB connection when I start up.  I get "No USB Device", wait a minute, say USB and it (usually) starts.

Following up with my fellow guinea pigs I also was spurred by the promise of a solution to download 3.1.2 for my 1st Generation iPod Touch. Unfortunately my experience mirrors recent posts above: indexing the first time takes more than a half hour; plugging it in again starts the whole process over and shows no sign of ever having taken in the first place. My iTunes library is neat and tidy: no unfilled fields; no weird text. There is no excuse for this problem persisting on the consumer end. Ford/Microsoft/Apple, fix this please.

It seems one solution is to downgrade the Touch to 3.0. Is that version compatible with iTunes 9?
